Watching from the sidelines…

By: Peter Katsiris | November 6th, 2008

As the UEFA Cup takes center stage across Europe this evening, one of the teams not participating tonight will be Olympiacos. The Greek Champions will endure their one night off – as required when playing in a group featuring an uneven amount of clubs. So, instead of the Georgios Karaiskakis Stadium getting ready for another night of European football, Benfica’s Estadio da Luz, and Metalist’s Metalist Stadium will host European affairs poised to shape the Group B.

As Olympiacos huddles around a television to keep tabs on the scores involving their position in the group, a mighty encounter will be on tap for Lisbon as Benfica entertains Galatasaray. The Turks edged Olympiacos on matchday one with a slim 1-0 victory in Istanbul. The Portuguese, however, were not as fortunate with their trip to Germany, as capital club, Hertha Berlin, scored a late equalizer to force the game into a 1-1 conclusion.

The Berliners will be hoping to grab more than just one point when the Bundesliga club locks horns with Ukrainian outfit Metalist Kharkhiv. The hosts have yet to play a match during the group stages, as on matchday one Myron Markevych’s side were in the same position Olympiacos find themselves this evening.

Heading into tonight’s fixtures, the group standings are as follows:
