Olympiacos Victorious in Cup Final
By: Takis | May 17th, 2008Olympiacos came out 2-0 victors over Aris FC today; to add another title to the trophy case. The win gives Olympiacos somewhat of a domestic treble. The Piraeus giants won the Greek League, Super Cup and today won the Greek Cup. A clean sweep for the 3rd time in four years.
Aris began the game with a quick pace, but could only generate a handful of corners and sloppy shots at the net. At the other end Olympiacos took sometime to adjust to the pace, but when they did the team began to show they deserved the title. A few chances were scuffed as only the final pass lacked in quality. However, there was nothing lacking in Luciano Galletti’s cross to Darko Kovacevic on 33 minutes. A well constructed play led to a great cross to a wide open Darko, who executed a bullet header past Aris goalie Kelemen.
Olympiacos carried the 1-0 lead into the second half, but extended it on 53 minutes. A corner taken crisply by Luciao Galletti flew straight to Polish defender Michal Zewlakow, who like Kovacevic in the first half, headed it with force into the Aris goal. 2-0 Olympiacos, and the Cup was looking more and more as a reality (I don’t think there was an doubt to begin with).
The League Champions came close to making it 3-0, 9 minutes later but Galletti’s effort hit the bar. Another chance came on 76 minutes. Kostas Mitroglou found himself on a breakaway, but sadly he couldn’t finish.
Two minutes later another chance came; a penalty was awarded to Olympiacos. The man who provided two passes for the two goals, Luciano Galletti, took his chance at scoring for the Eruthroleuki. He stepped up, but his shot sailed just past the post. Two glorious chances blown in the late stages.
Aris nearly grabbed a consolation goal, but Avraam Papadopoulos’ effort hit the crossbar. Nikopolidis kept the clean sheet and Olympiacos won the game 2-0; their 23rd cup in club history, and furthermore their 13th double in club history.
