Castillo set for comeback?
By: Peter Katsiris | July 28th, 2008
Former Olympiacos star, Neri Alberto Castillo, says he wants to return to Greece if he is wanted. After leaving the Greek Champions before the start of last season to join Ukrainian outfit Shakhtar Donetsk, the Mexican international has failed to continue the success he had in Greece. In a recent interview with Greek radio station “Real FM”, Castillo admitted he wants to return to Piraeus.
It was obvious Castillo was unsettled in Ukraine, and he confirmed it by demanding a move away from Donetsk. Granting his wishes, Shakhtar loaned Castillo to Manchester City but the change in scenery couldn’t save the season for Castillo. An injury plagued the most of his stay at Eastlands. Looking for a fresh start, the man known in Greece as ‘Nintendo’ is debating if he should reset and return to Olympiacos.
“I am ready to return, if Mr. Kokkalis wants me back. The president is the one that makes the decisions. He is the one that wants to put a great team together. It is all up to Olympiakos. Me, as Nery, I want to come back to Greece. Olympiakos have done so much for me and the same goes from me towards them as well. I have had my best moments playing for Olympiakos. I love Olympiakos and the club’s supporters. I will never forget what I have gone through with them. I love Greece and if you love something you can never let it go. All I said in the past is that I did not like the way they handled my transfer. The way I left from the club,”
“I want to leave Shakhtar. I still do not know where I am going to be playing next. My father is looking at the matter, if I am going to stay or leave from Manchester City. To all honesty, I do not know what to do. Football in Spain is different, I do not like playing in England, and I certainly do not like playing in the Ukraine at all! Never go to Donetsk. It is so cold over there! It brings you down from a psychological standpoint. It is not like Greece where you see the sun on a daily basis.”
This news seems as no surprise for Olympiacos fans as it was reported several times throughout the past season that Castillo wanted an Olympiacos. It remains to be seen if club President Sokratis Kokkalis feels the same way.

Takis - amazing this came up today because I posted by Nery today as well. I hope he goes to a team that uses his talents properly. I am embarrassed how poorly he has been treated and know he’ll be a great addition to where he goes

j — I agree 100%, but he can be partly blamed for the mistreatment. However, I think he has faced some bad acts of fate in recent times that has marred the last season. Hopefully he returns to Olympiacos, but a move to a Mexican or MLS club would be great for Castillo.
Albert — it states in my article that a Greek Radio station conducted the interview. Greek sites have reported on the interview as well. I don’t think you are interested in Greek text, are you?
If you are…. go right ahead:

i imagine the supporters still love him and would welcome him back in a heartbeat. why not? he’s done nothing since he left. hope he doesn’t use this as an audition for spain or italy, though…

I think any of this problems were in the past and nothing to do with him at Man City. He’s fallen victim to changing administrations. I’m expecting to hear a lot from clubs in the Eredivisie about him.

he’s extremely talented but he certainly has problems with his temper. Here in Greece he used to be quite irresponsible, irritating and even aggressive towards coaches. I really doubt that coaches and managers of giant European clubs would tolerate this sort of attitude…so he’s better off at olympiacos where people love and respect him…yet, olympiacos now has a new young coach, Valderve…and i’m sure Castillo will manage to create a mess with him…good luck to him anywayz
