Celtic in Torosidis chase
By: Peter Katsiris | January 6th, 2009
According to the Greek press, Scottish giants Celtic FC are prepared to make a bid for Olympiacos defender Vasilis Torosidis. With a Greece international already on the roster in Giorgos Samaras, the Scottish Premier League champions look ready to their Greek touch by transferring in one of Greece’s most promising backline talents.
There were no financial details included in the rumors, nor doesn’t it seem that either side has discussed a move from Piraeus to Glasgow.
Coincidentally, speculation comes just days after Torosidis spoke to the Greek press and pledged to end his career with the ‘Erythrolefki’. After his side’s 1-0 defeat of Asteras Tripolis, Torosidis revealed his intentions of staying with the Greek Champions.
In somewhat of a discrete manner, Torosidis clearly stated he had intentions of finishing his career in an Olympiacos uniform. “Hopefully I can finish my career with Olympiacos,” pledged Torosidis.
Although the rumors about a move to Celtic Park surfaced a handful of days after Torosidis’ proclamation, it hasn’t been the first time the 24-year-old has been linked with a move away from the Giorgos Karaiskakis Stadium. In the summer the likes of Newcastle, and Blackburn Rovers provided interest from England, while France’s Olympique de Marseille also had interest in snagging a Torosidis transfer.
