Diogo sidelined for ten days, Mitroglou out even longer
By: Peter Katsiris | December 20th, 2008
Olympiacos strikers Diogo Luis Santo and Konstantinos Mitroglou were both submitted to a medical examination featuring an MRI and an ultrasound at the Medical Center in Athens.
The results of Diogo’s examination revealed the Brazilian suffered an ankle strain in his side’s 4-0 defeat of Hertha Berlin on Thursday. The club’s medical staff expects Diogo to be sidelined for the next ten days, and will miss Olympiacos’ final match of 2008 against Thrasyvoulos on Sunday.
As for Mitroglou, the injury is a little more serious as the U-21 Greece international has been ruled out for two to three weeks with bruised quadriceps. Mitroglou, who has been limited to a handful of starts and sparse appearances as a substitute, will also miss the Thrasyoulos match. His fitness, however, for the club’s first match of the New Year against Asteras Tripolis will be determined after the winter break.
Although injuries are never a good thing, Olympiacos is very fortunate that the timing of these sidelining conditions have occurred during a relatively quiet time for the Greek Champions. Sunday’s home game against bottom side Thrasyvoulos marks the lone match for the Erythrolefki for the next two weeks, before resuming the season a few days after the start of the new calendar year.
With two strikers absent for Sunday’s match, Darko Kovacevic will assume the starting role in the Olympiacos attack on Sunday, as the Serbian returns to the starting eleven for the first time since losing his spot to Diogo.
