EURO steals limelight: Valverde appointed new manager
By: Peter Katsiris | July 1st, 2008The ongoing EURO 2008 tournament has stolen the headlines from football at the club level. For Olympiacos this is no different, as the club has made acquisitions in ready-to-go transfer window.
Olympiacos were able to fill the void in their coaching department, as the club announced that Ernesto Valverde would take over the reigns at the club. The Spaniard will look to guide a club who is hungry for more European success, while the pressure to win the domestic double is enforced by club
president Sokratis Kokkalis. Valverde’s most prolific league run was when he led RCD Espanyol to the UEFA Cup finals two years ago; unfortunately for the Barcelona based side, they fell to the then defending champions Sevilla FC. The task will be of greater demand when Olympiacos embarks on another Champions League adventure this August. For the first time since the 1998/1999 edition of Europe’s most prestigious club tournament, Greek Champions Olympiacos CFP will have to enter the qualifying rounds of the Champions League. Unlike the previous time Olympiacos were forced through the qualifying rounds, the Eruthroleuki will start off in the 3rd Qualifying Round and hoping to avoid Europe’s top clubs. Like any manager at Olympiacos, Valverde will face lots of criticism and calls for a sacking if he is unable to get the club on a winning start both domestically and in the Champions League.
