Getting back to business

A long international break is finally over, and several of Olympiacos’ capped players enjoy a successful spell with their respective national teams. With Michal Zewlakow and Vassilis Torosidis scoring for Poland and Greece respectively, Olympiacos players began to show their class on the international level. Now, the task could be more daunting as the Piraeus club begins an early season stretch run with league play and UEFA Cup contention in the horizon.
For the uncapped players, they enjoyed a relaxing week off after the opening day 3-1triump over Asteras Tripolis. With several summer signings not part of the roster for their respective associations, Olympiacos put its depth to the test with a friendly against Second Division club Ionikos.
A 4-1 was nothing to be excited about, but rather the drama and excitement found in the ninety minutes. Diogo Santo scored his first for the ‘Eruthroleuki’, and his abilities have already led to English giants Chelsea considering a probable purchase from Olympiacos. Like Diogo, Oscar also notched his first for his new club; while Darko Kovacevic and Luciano Galletti continued to increase their scoring totals. However, the most interesting and highly discussed ongoing during the friendly was the early substitution of Sebastian Leto. Most would think an injury would rule out the on-loan winger from finishing the match, but instead his 19th minute exit was caused by a backlash from club manager Ernesto Valverde. After demanding Leto to stop galivanting down the pitch with the ball solely at his feet, Valverde lost his cool and sent Leto to the bench.
It will be interesting to see if Leto will get the nod to start this weekend against Skoda Xanthi, or even the club’s first leg tie against FC Nordsjælland.
