Kokkalis continues to court Valverde over extension
By: Peter Katsiris | January 8th, 2009
Sokratis Kokkalis has amped up his pressure on manager Ernesto Valverde over the Spaniard’s future with the Greek Champions, and now Valverde is close to signing a contract extension. The pair have met on several occasions, but it seems a Thursday get-together has steered Valverde en route to re-signing.
Though Valverde started his career in Greece on rather shaky ground, after Olympiacos was shockingly knocked out of the UEFA Champions League by Anorthosis Famagusta in the third qualifying round, a successful bid to reach the knockout rounds of the UEFA Cup, and continuous triumphs in the Greek Super League have erased the nightmares from Nicosia.
While first place in the Greek Super League is not a unique situation for the most successful club in Greek football, Olympiacos dynamic performances against domestic and European rivals in recent weeks have been the deciding factor to reward Valverde.
Slaying the likes of Benfica, Hertha Berlin, and Panionios with scintillating skill in attack, the trio is just a sample of victims falling to defeat against Olympiacos’ raging offense.
Currently in his first year of a two-year contract, the Greek press suggests Olympiacos is offering the former Espanyol manager an one year extension through the 2010-2011 season.
