Olympiacos linked with Nuno Gomes
By: Peter Katsiris | July 9th, 2008
Several media sources from across Europe are linking Benfica and Portuguese international with a move to the Greek Champions. The connection does make sense, as Olympiacos is in need of another striker, alongside last year’s leading scorer Darko Kovacevic.
Currently, the Portuguese is still tied down to Benfica on a contract which lasts until the summer of 2009; but a good offer from the Piraeus club, could lure Nuno Gomes to the Greek Super League. According to the player’s agent, Marko Piccioli, Gomes wants to stay with Benfica; however, the agent also revelaed that Gomes is open to any offers and will consider them throroughly.
At 32-years old, some — including me — may begin to wonder what Nuno Gomes has left in the ‘tank’ and what he can bring to Olympiacos — a club looking for success in Europe. His scoring statistics prove he is not a proven goal scorer, but more of a hard worker; a type of player that Olympiacos has seen year after year.

he looks young for 32. who knows, Pauleta still scored lots of goals for PSG in his 30’s. maybe nuno can do the same…

Julien I agree he is getting old, and Richard I understand your point exactly. However, it must be said that although both players are of the same cultural background hey both possess different styles. Pauleta is an all around attacker who can score many goals, while Nuno Gomes is and always was a hard worker/assist man in the box. Yes he can score, but we are talking about a club in need of a true goal scorer (by true I mean, he scores and scores….all he really does is score). So for Olympiacos to sign Nuno and pay all the fees, I believe it is a waste.

you are right Takis. it makes me wish that Crespo or maybe even Inzaghi could be persuaded to come to Olympiacos…
