Olympiacos looking to swoop for Basinas

This is no joke. Olympiacos is very much interested in RCD Mallorca’s Angelos Basinas, and are prepared to offer the Greek international a two year contract in the coming 48 hours. Originally rumored to be headed to AEK Athens FC, after it was clear Basinas was looking for a move out of Mallorca.

Basinas started out with Olympiacos’ arch rivals Panathinaikos. He spent nearly 15 years with the Athenian based club. When Basinas was released by Panathinaikos in 2006, he was rumored to leave PAO for Olympiacos or AEK; however, the call from abroad was much more appealing. Interest from Everton, Liverpool, and Birmingham was not in Basinas’ favour as he elected to stay away from England. Opting for a move to Spain, Basinas signed with Real Mallorca. He made 74 apperances for the La Liga side, and scored once. His attributes not only helped the team defensively, but offensively as well. He is good sense of ball distribution made the Mallorca attack a danger to opponents.

Basinas was rumoured to leave Mallorca in the winter transfer window. Many clubs were interested in signing him, including Turkish sides Galatasaray and Fenerbahce. However, he remained in Spain; but, it seems he is ready to now make a move back home. There has been plenty of speculation as to where the next stop will take Basinas. Eintracht Frankfurt — a Greek player’s haven — was rumored to have interest weeks ago. Celtic were also included in speculation, but media reports now suggest Olympiacos are set to lock up Basinas on a two year contract.

The announcement is said to be just days away. Desperate for a revival of the Olympiacos, the club will surely benefit if they do in fact acquire Basinas’ rights. Able to play in a DM role; a Basinas arrival could see a Cristian Ledesma departure.
