The holiday season is supposed to be a joyous time for all, but Olympiacos CFP is in mourning after the symbol of Olympiacos CFP Achilleas Grammatikopoulos, passed away at the age of 100 on Tuesday. A member of the original Olympiacos roster from 1925, Grammatikopoulos became idolized by supporters of the ‘Erythrolefki’ for generations to come – always receiving a standing ovation at the Giorgos Karaiskakis Stadium.
The club announced its sorrow for the Grammatikopoulos family, as well as its own pain in an announcement posted on the club’s official website. “The Olympiacos family is mourning the loss of the club’s symbol of history and veteran footballer Achilleas Grammatikopoulos at the age of 100. The funeral for Mr. Grammatikopoulos will take place on Friday, January 2 at 11:00 at the Saint Vasileios Church and later at Athens’ Third Cemetery. The Grammatikopoulos family wishes all fellow mourners to not send flowers, but to make donations of any type to the non-profit ‘Chatzikyriakeio’ foundation.”
Grammatikopoulos made a large impact on the club, whose press conference room bears the name of the ‘Erythrolefki’ legend. Grammatikopoulos held more than just a symbolic tie to the club, as many current members of Olympiacos, including president Sokratis Kokkalis and Predrag Djordjevic were very close with the longest living member of ‘O Thrylos’.
The club’s current captain, Djordjevic, expressed his sorrow for the Grammatikopoulos with a press release of his own. “I would like to express my deepest condolences, on behalf of myself and my teammates to the family of Achilleas Grammatikopoulos, a man who has left us yet was somebody we all know. He has given so much to the club, and is truly a figure to be idolized.”
