Less than twenty-four hours after clinching a berth in the first knockout round of the final edition of the UEFA Cup, Olympiacos will learn its opponents for the round of thirty two on Friday as UEFA conducts the draw for the first knockout round in Nyon, Switzerland.
Overshadowed by the morning’s preceedings featuring the Round of 16 draw for the UEFA Champions League, the UEFA Cup draw takes center stage at 13:00 CET as UEFA staff and football legends carry out the draw for the first knockout round.
There has been little time for Olympiacos to enjoy a memorable 4-0 win over Hertha Berlin on the same night the club reached its golden jubilee in matches played. Despite the quick turnaround, Olympiacos is curious to discover which club they will encounter for matches fifty-one and fifty-two.
With eight clubs who finished in third place in their respective Champions League groups joining the UEFA Cup fray, the rather complex draw pits UEFA cup group winners against third place finishers in the UEFA Cup. Meanwhile, UEFA Cup runners-up have the pleasure of hosting one of the eight Champions League rejects.
Olympiacos finished third in UEFA Cup Group B, behind group winners Metalist Kharkiv and Turkish Champions Galatasaray. The Super League leaders have seven potential opponents in the next round, including Premier League side Manchester City. Alongside the Premier League’s newly revived club, Olympiacos has the possibility of encountering Belgian side Standard de Liege, Italian side Udinese, Germany’s VfL Wolfsburg or Hamburg SV, Ligue 1 side AS Snit-Etienne, and Russian giants CSKA Moscow.
The draw offers plenty of excitement for Olympiacos and other football fans, as several high-calibre clubs compete for a spot in the Round of 16.
