A former Greek League Champion with Olympiacos, Piraeus joins Austria to mourn the loss of Peter Persidis who died in Vienna on Wednesday at the age of 61. The former Austria international was born in Vienna, and spent most of his footballing career in Austria.
While his father was born in Greece, Persidis chose to play international football for his native Austria; however, in 1971 Persidis departed from Austria’s oldest football club, First Vienna, to join Greek Champions Olympiacos.
A successful sweeper, Persidis was part of the ‘Erythrolefki’ backline which backstopped Olympiacos to three consecutive titles from 1973 to 1975. Additionally, the club also won domestic double honours in 1973 and in 1975.
He returned to the Austrian capital after Olympiacos’ secured the last of a trio of league titles, and signed with current Austrian Champions Rapid Vienna.
A moment silence in honour of Persidis has been arranged by the Austrian National Team ahead of their international friendly against Sweden in Graz next month.
