Surgery for Nihat silences Olympiacos link
By: Peter Katsiris | January 20th, 2009
It wasn’t the most vibrant headline regarding Olympiacos’ first acquisition of the winter transfer window, but the ongoing rumor pointing Villarreal’s Nihat Kahveci with a move to the Giorgos Karaiskaki has come to an immediate end as the Turkish striker underwent knee surgery on Monday.
Tipped to be the solution for the Greek Champions in this time of crisis which sees Ernesto Valverde have only one striker at his disposal, there will be no Greco-Turkish linkup in the port city of Piraeus. A leader for the Turkish national team, the Greek press labelled Nihat as an ideal choice for the Piraeus-based club.
Fortunately for supporters of ‘O Thrylos’, the rumors regarding Nihat are not the only ones swirling in and around Athens. Instead, the long search for a striker will have to be continued elsewhere.

This isnt a smart idea. Olympiacos would lose so many of its greek fans and to mention violence would just break out. Turks have no place in Greek football.

Well Marcos you can be relieved to hear that it won’t be happening. Although I don’t think the racial claim is necessary, I do agree that the Greco-Turkish relationship has not died down enough to allow players within large clubs such as Olympiacos.
Don’t forget, however, Olympiacos did have a Turkish player a few years ago by the name of Erol Bulut. He wasn’t much of a success though.
