Time to Serve
By: Peter Katsiris | March 3rd, 2009
While Greece still boasts automatic conscription for up to one year for men aged 18-45, Olympiacos players will be serving time of a different sort. Instead of joining the Greek army, several Olympiacos regulars face a short layoff spanning one to two games after accumulated bookings force Olympiacos manager Ernesto Valverde to select what games his player must miss.
Four accumulate yellow cards result in a one-game suspension, while seven result in a two-game stint away from action. Luciano Galletti is slated to miss one game of action with his four bookings, and the Argentine will serve his absence this weekend against PAOK at the Toumba Stadium.
Also missing out on the venture north to Thessaloniki will be Brazilian striker Diogo, who has picked up seven cautions this term. The former Portuguesa forward will also miss the ensuing Super League encounter with Panionios at Nea Smyrni seven days later.
Anastasios Pantos will miss the encounter with Iraklis at the Giorgos Karaiskakis Stadium in Piraeus, while Dudu will serve his suspension during Olympiacos’ meeting with Levadeiakos in Levadia.
The suspensions will not rule out any Olympiacos player during the club’s Greek Cup fixture with PAOK on Wednesday.
