First Lemonis, Now Ivic; Kokkalis has holes to fill

By: Takis | May 8th, 2008

After Olympiacos manager Takis Lemonis was fired in February after Olympiacos’s exit from the UEFA Champions League, club President Socrates Kokkalis filled the void by promoting assistant manager Josep Segura to the leading role. It seemed like a Ilija Ivictemporary bandaid for the problem, which is expected to be solved this summer.

However, there is another task that is added to Kokkalis summer agenda. Techinal Director and former Olympiacos player, Ilija Ivic (pictured), was fired earlier this week as he and the president couldn’t agree on the way the team should be lead through acquisitions.

It was a shocking development for Olympiacos fans as rumours for a coaching replacement seemed to be fueled by Ivic himself. Among the list of replacements (created by Olympiacos supporters) for Ivic include former player Giovanni and Cristian Karembeu (rumoured for the position a few years back).

On the managerial level the rumour mill continues to produce plenty of scenarios. Below details some of the big names in line for the top job:
1. Fatih Terim (Current Turkish National Team Manager)
2. Quiqui Flores (Former Valencia Manager)
3. Evald Lienen (Current Panionios Manager)
4. Marcelo Lippi (Former Italy Manager)

The following months should be interesting for the Olympiacos faithful, as there is an added edge in this summer’s transfer market.

It can and it might, we have transferred in Turks as players but never a manger. An interesting fact is that Turks have managed to be involved in Greek soccer, but never has a Greek participated in Turkish soccer.

Well Richard I think Marcelo Lippi would be a great fit with Olympiacos, we’ve seen what he can do as a manager. However I don’t mind a manager who will be able to guide my beloved club deep into the Champions League (hopefully the title) as well as continued success domestically. You have to understand that Greek media tends to have their own spins on the papers, just so they can increase their sales…the actually manager might not even be listed up above.
